Daniel, who recently finshed his international volunteering experience, shares his personal reflections on his placement in Kawangware, Nairobi – a journey of faith, community and joyful discovery.
Daniel recalls his first impressions upon landing in Kenya: “Arriving in Nairobi at dawn, I was welcomed by two sisters who had waited patiently in the cool morning air. The kindness set the tone for what became one of the most grace-filled experiences of my life. From the first day, I felt not like a visitor but a member of their community.”
He further shares: “The greatest joys of my experience were threefold: the children’s cheerfulness, the immersion in a new cultural setting, and a deepened intimacy with God. Walking through Kawangware or to the school, the children would rush up with bright smiles and high-fives. Their joy reminded me of the simplicity of heart that God calls us to. Teaching French, computing and leading a journalism club were daily delights. Watching the pupils’ confidence grow filled me with gratitude”
Another great gift according to Daniel was the opportunity of immersing himself in Kenyan life: “I had hoped to broaden my vision and deepen my sense of the Church’s universality, and my hope was fulfilled. From visiting the sisters’ families in mountain villages to travelling by motorcycle through the countryside, I discovered a culture alive with colour, resilience and warmth. The sisters’ humour and patience, even as I struggled to eat sugarcane, made every day a lesson of humility and joy.”
This was also a time for growing in faith. “Most profoundly, this time drew me closer to God” Daniel explains. “The rhythm of community prayer—morning and evening prayer, daily Mass, and Eucharistic adoration —opened up new space for reflection. Through witnessing how naturally God stood in the sister’s lives, I began to know Him more personally and clearly sense His will for my own life.”
“Living in community was both a challenge and a blessing. The shared meals, prayer, and laughter created a true home. Learning to depend on others taught me the value of detachment and freedom through simplicity.”

What is left about this experience now that Daniel is back to his home and life? “Back home, I look back on Kwangware with deep gratitude. The children’s joy, the sisters’ witness and the faith that sustained them have left a lasting mark. My time in Kenya has broadened my heart, strengthened my faith and renewed my sense of purpose, gifts for which I am truly thankful.”
We are also grateful to Daniel for his service and his commitment!
