Daniel is our latest Assumption Volunteer, having left England in late April to begin his four-month mission in Kenya. He has joined our community in Kawangware and, as he begins to settle in, he shares his experience:
“The sisters have been really nice and I’ve been getting more familiar with the place generally. In the community I’ll usually join them in praying the Office before the meals, and also for adoration. I’ve been out a bit now, I’ve been accompanied to the supermarket and parish church here, and the priest who came to say Mass on Saturday took me along on an errand to a different neighbourhood which was very interesting to see.”
Having discussed it with with the sisters about the needs of the school, Daniel has also started his work there:
“They thought it would be best for me to help with teaching French and Computer Science to the older year groups, as well as some other possible clubs that are still to be organised. The first day of school was on Tuesday, and one of the sisters who teaches French took me around the different classrooms before having our own French lesson with the oldest year group here. Then yesterday I had another lesson with that class and also watched first one half of a year have a Computer Science lesson before giving the same lesson the other half of the year, which was both really enjoyable and interesting!”

Sr Nancy, who is in charge of the volunteers in Kawangare tells us:
“We recently had a meeting with the whole school team, for mentorship on savings, Daniel was one of the participants. He is doing well and has integrated beautifully into the team. Everyone is so happy to have him, and we are especially touched by his humility and openness. Today, he shared with me his first experience washing clothes with water in a bucket. His simple joy spoke volumes about his positive spirit! What a gift he is to us! We are truly grateful.”
