We are delighted to begin the new academic year with a team of Assumption Volunteers in Newcastle and Middlesbrough in the North East of Engand. We gathered in London before travelling to the mission areas for a week-long orientation and community building. Nina, Joan and Rasheed flew in from the Philippines, Leah from Kenya and Fiorella, originally from Peru.
“The first week was full of surprises about English culture, we discovered the delights of British cuisine (yes, there are scruptious dishes to enjoy!) and got to know one another as we begin building our AV community for 2024/25. It was a great opportunity to share and deepen our understanding of our motivation, hopes and dreams for the volunteer year. We were immersed in the spirituality of the Assumption with Srs Josephrita and Francesca joining us, together with Anne Marie who lead the week. Between the ‘serious’ sessions and learning about the practicalities, we had lots of fun as well. The games and simulation exercises were not only helpful to understand the issues better, but provided much cause for entertainment as well! The week also provided an opportunity to begin to get to know our surroundings in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and we were fortunate enough to have a sunny day when we visited Tynemouth and the seaside. We hope to make friends locally as well – it was good to meet Fr Jude and Ruth who live nearby and will journey with us throughout the year. The spiritual highlight of the week was our commissioning mass in the house and weekend masses in the local parishes.”
From the following week we were welcomed in Kids Kabin by their dedicated and enthusiastic team. Our practical induction and training begun with lots of information and sessions to help us learn about all things Kids Kabin related. We are not yet experts in woodwork or pottery, but had a good introduction and look forward to mastering our skills and finding our passion in the coming months.
Joan and Nina have now moved to their home in Middlesbrough where they work with communities in various locations around town. Their experience is similar, yet different in so many ways. We can’t wait to get togeher with the two mission communities and hear about these exciting few weeks!”
